Starpoint celebrated their first ever district wide Unity Day on October 18th. Unity day was created by PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and is celebrated all over the country. The message of Unity Day is that by coming together in promoting and encouraging kindness, acceptance and inclusion, all children, teens and adults can send the message that no child should ever experience bullying. At Starpoint, the K-12 Student Services worked very hard to create unique ways to celebrate and make Unity Day very meaningful to all of the students and adults throughout our school district. In all buildings, students and staff wore orange, the official color of Unity Day. All buildings also worked together to create an orange paper chain that spanned from Fricano all the way to the High School. These were not just any orange chains, but rather every single one had one way to be kind, inclusive or accepting written on them… these messages being directly from students. All buildings shared Unity Day messages on the announcements in the week leading up. The High School and Regan Intermediate both had special library displays including books that highlighted kindness, inclusion and acceptance. The High School and Middle School put their creative skills to the test in making unique videos that were used to teach the Regan Intermediate and Fricano Primary students about Unity Day’s message. Fricano Primary, Regan Intermediate and the Middle School, all had displays in their lobbies highlighting Unity Day, some offering students a chance to sign a poster as a pledge to be kind, inclusive and accepting today and everyday. These buildings also did anti-bullying/inclusivity themed classroom lessons in the weeks leading up to Unity Day. Fricano Primary and Regan Intermediate raffled off official Unity Day t-shirts to students. Regan Intermediate had a poster contest where students were able to showcase their creative skills while following the theme of kindness and inclusion. One winner in each grade will have their poster designs turned into large posters that will be displayed in the building year round. A couple of our buildings even had kind and inclusive messages written on their classroom windows for students to see on their way into the building. K-12 Student Services is very grateful for all of the faculty, staff, student and parent support in making Unity Day so special in its first year being a district wide celebration. We are looking forward to continuing to recognize Unity Day at Starpoint for years to come as well as adding new and fun ways to celebrate! #onestarpoint!
