The Starpoint Central School District will be holding a Meet the Candidates Night on May 4, 2023 at 6:00 pm in the Middle School Cafeteria in advance of the May 16, 2023 School Board Member Election and Budget Vote. This meeting will be moderated by the Buffalo Chapter of the League of Women Voters. The meeting will be livestreamed through our normal Zoom meeting process.Voting Location, Date and Time
Voting will take place at Starpoint High School, 4363 Mapleton Rd., Lockport, NY, on Tuesday, May 16, 2023, from 7:00 am until 8:00 pm. Please enter the District at Driveway D, park in the allotted section. Enter the school through the Fine Arts and Athletic Center entrance. Voters who cannot or prefer not to get to the polls on the day of the vote due to illness, travel outside of Niagara County may download an absentee ballot application above. Please fill out and return the application to the District Clerk, Dorothy Szpaicher, via email at dszpaicher@starpointcsd.org, regular mail or in-person. An absentee ballot will then be sent or handed out, if received in person, to residents who have completed the request for an absentee ballot application. The application can also be picked up in person in the office of the District Clerk, located at the end of D-wing in the Business Office, between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday. A regular voter absentee ballot application must be received by the District Clerk at least seven (7) days before the election if the ballot is to be mailed to the voter, or the day before the election, if the ballot is to be delivered personally to the voter. If the District Clerk finds the application meets all of the required criteria and is satisfied the applicant is a qualified voter, the Clerk may issue an absentee ballot.
Voter Eligibility
To be eligible to vote, you must be:
- at least 18 years of age;
- a United States citizen;
- a resident of the District for at least 30 days immediately prior to the vote.Voter Verification
Voting inspectors will confirm a voter's eligibility by checking Niagara County voter registration records provided to the District by the Niagara County Board of Elections. However, you do not need to be a registered voter to vote in a school election; you may sign an affidavit attesting to your eligibility (see Voter Eligibility above).
On the May 16, 2023, ballot there are the following: Two Propositions and the Election of Three Board of Education MembersProposition 1: General Fund Budget - $64,954,038
Shall the general fund budget totaling $64,954,038 as adopted by the Board of Education for the school year 2023-2024, be approved and the required funds be raised by a tax upon the taxable property of the school district, to be levied and collected as required by law?
Proposition 2: Capital Project - $69,820,000
That the Board of Education of Starpoint Central School District, in the County of Niagara, New York (the "District"), is hereby authorized to construct alterations and improvements to all district school buildings and sites, substantially as described in a plan prepared by the District in conjunction with Wendel Architecture & Engineering and Turney Construction, and to expend an amount not to exceed $69,820,000 therefore; (b) that a tax is hereby voted in the aggregate amount of not to exceed $69,820,000 to pay such cost, said tax to be levied and collected in installments in such years and in such amounts as shall be determined by said Board of Education; and (c) that in anticipation of said tax, bonds of the Dstrict are hereby authorized to be issued in the principal amount of not to exceed $69,820,000, and a tax is hereby voted to pay the interest on said bonds as the same shall become due and payable
Election of Three Trustees to the Board of Education
On May 16, 2023, voters will be electing THREE candidates to the Starpoint Central School District Board of Education. The terms of Mr. Jeffrey Duncan, Dr. Shawn Riester and Ms. Kelley Swann will expire on June 30, 2023. The following candidates are running as candidates for the Board of Education. The three candidates with the highest number of votes will each get three (3) year terms beginning on July 1, 2023 and running through June 30, 2026.On the Ballot:
