This past Saturday the Girls' and Boys' Cross Country Teams finished up their season running at the State meet in Verona, NY.  Getting there Friday and running the course for their practice, they recognized this course was not going to be as easy as the others.  Faced with nonstop hills, both the girls and boys still gave it their all. Both teams finished 7th out of 10 other teams.  In the Girls' Class B race, Shannon Zugelder placed 12th overall out of 116 girls.  Congratulations to everyone who made it this far in the season and to everyone else who ran this year!

    11/7/22

*Last Friday, the top 8 boys and girls cross country runners left school and traveled out to Alden where every single runner, place, and point would count.  The boys ran early that morning and seemed to easily defeat their biggest rival (Hamburg)  winning the Class B title 52-86.  Peyton Spatorico finished 2nd overall with Gavin Farrell closely behind in 5th.  Tim Lukasik, Franklin Payne, and Aiden Preisch helped to finish out the scoring by placing in the top 25.  The girls felt the pressure from the boys and used this pressure to just barely defeat the team who was also their biggest rival (Hamburg) leading them to the Class B title with a score of 57-61.   Helping seal the victory was Shannon Zugelder, placing first with Annabelle Pacoloutte directly behind her in 2nd.  Sophia Waliszewski, Meagan Zupo, and Gurmann Kaur finished closely behind to close out the scoring, with Hannah Laubacker, Lyndzie Wagner, and Ava Wohleber finishing right after, acting as placeholders.  What does this mean now, you may ask?  Well, let’s give it to you in simpler terms: for the first time ever in Starpoint history, both the Girls' and Boys' Varsity Cross Country Teams have qualified for STATES!  This Friday they will leave for Verona, NY where they will finish out their season racing on Saturday at the State Meet!  Congratulations to everyone on a wonderful season!  (11/7)

*On behalf of the Boys' Varsity Volleyball team, we want to send a sincere thank you to all of you who turned out for our semi-final match on Saturday afternoon at Grand Island.  Yes, it did not go as we hoped it would.  However, this season was by no means a letdown.  In fact, this team tied for the greatest number of wins in a season, which is a success no matter how you look at it, and all of Starpoint was exceptionally well represented all season by your Spartan Spikers.  If you see one of the guys in the halls or in class today, congratulate them on a great season.

    11/4/22

*Your Varsity Football Team won the Class "A" Chuck Funke Bowl last night, defeating Amherst 21-20 in a thriller.   Phil Pirinelli intercepted a Hail Mary as time expired to secure the win.  He also caught 2 TDs and had 86 yards receiving with 6 receptions.  Gage LaPlante was 13-23 for 206 yards and 3 TDs.  Kyler Lee caught the other TC.  George Thompson had 8 tackles and Frank O'Connor won the Sportsmanship Award for the game.  Congrats to the entire team and thank you to the Varsity Cheerleaders for doing a great job all year.

    11/2/22

If you were there, you saw it!  If not, you missed it.
An electric atmosphere was abundant last night as your Boys' Varsity Spartan Spikers began their playoff run last night against a very tough Sweet Home Panthers squad.  The crowd was into it, the players were into it, and Mr. Schiesser made sure it remained that way throughout the match, from which the Spartans emerged victorious by scores of 25-21, 25-21, and 27-25 to sweep the Panthers off the court.
DeAngelo D'Aloise and Evan Saunders led the balanced attack with 10 kills each, while Colby Bashor, Alex Chukhanenko, and Dmitry Zhilevich contributed 4, 3, and 2 kills respectively.  On defense, the block party was led by Evan Saunders' 5 solo blocks and Dmitry Zhilevich's 3 timely stuffs of Sweet Home's predominant attacker.  Once again, senior captain Jon Zawada set up the offense with 22 assists.  What the stats do not reflect is the remarkably steady play of Junior libero Raistlin Rowcroft, who made several crucial serve-receive passes and timely digs to turn the tide back in favor of the Spartans.
The Spartan Spikers want to sincerely thank the crowd for their outstanding support, and also want to invite each and every one of you to join us at Grand Island this coming Saturday at 1:00 PM as they prepare to take on the #4 ranked Vikings.  You helped us last night, and we want you to be there again when we continue our playoff march.   (11/3)

    11/1/22

This past weekend, the Girls' Cross Country Team kicked off their championship season, traveling to East Aurora High School to run the ECIC meet.  Here, every single girl on the team competed against others to secure the win.  The girls placed 1st overall in Division 2!   Finishing in the top 5 were Shannon Zugelder and Annabelle Pacouloutte, with Sophia Waliszewski and Meagan Zupo finishing in the top 10 all, earning their ECIC All Stars 2022 recognition!  Helping to seal the win was Lyndzie Wagner with a PR!   Angie Pascual was pulled up into the varsity race that morning unexpectedly, but she showed up and helped the team out.   As well as competing with people from different schools, the girls competed against each other to earn their spot in the top 8, who will advance to Sectionals this Friday and race in hopes of going to the states.  The girls who will be representing Starpoint this Friday are Shannon Zugelder, Annabelle Pacoloutte, Sophia Waliszewski, Meagan Zupo, Lyndzie Wagner, Hannah Laubacker, Ava Wohleber, and Gurmann Kaur!  Congrats ladies on a great season and Good Luck to those still competing!

    10/25/22

Last week the Spartan Girls' XC Team was all prepared to face the Amherst Tigers and Will South Billies until they got news of their meet being postponed to Monday!   Even with this upsetting event, the girls took it as an opportunity to train more and advance their speed.  Last night they showed what they had and finished out their last dual meets, taking places 1,2,3,4,5, beating the Tigers on a clean swipe, and place 1,2,3,5,6, beating the Billies on another easy swipe. This double win led the Spartan Girls home to be ECIC Division Champs after an undefeated season with a record of 5-0. The first major showdown to prove their dominance once again will be this weekend at East Aurora to kick off their championship season with the ECICs race, where they will face their top competitors for states once again. Good job ladies and good luck Saturday!   (10/25)

*Last night your Boys' JV and Varsity XC Teams dominated against the Amherst Tigers and the Will South Billies with a clean sweep victory taking places 1,2,3,4,6 and 7.   Although conditions were rough and the heat was intense, the boys managed to sweep the competition, with Peyton Spatorico coming in first, with Gavin Farell, Frankie Payne, and Tim Lukasik not far behind.  Now your boys move on to ECICs where they will embark on their championship journey and dominate other races in the future. With sectionals upcoming soon, they will train hard to hopefully earn their place and advance to states. Great Job boys and good luck!  (10/25)

*Last night your Lady Spartans Field Hockey Team beat the Williamsville East Flames 3-2.  It was a 2-hour long game that went into DOUBLE OVERTIME and a shootout!!!  The Flames were up 2-0 going into the 2nd but the Spartans did not let that get them down.  Nat Lawrence had the first assist with a goal by Alex Martorana.  The next goal was off a beautiful corner assisted by Jaimie Frass and tipped in by Jordan Duncan.  The shootout goals were scored by Nat Lawrence and defenseman Mara Beiter!!  A massive shoutout goes to Liv Terranova in net.  She did not let in a single goal in the shootout.  She continues to be a dominant force commanding the defense and we couldn’t do it without her.  Last shoutout goes to the student section!!   Next game will be HOME vs. Hamburg on Thursday at 5:00 P.M.  Come out and pack the stands, the theme is a whiteout!   (10/25)

*Last night, your Boys' Varsity Spartan Spikers wrapped up their regular season in style, defeating the Lumberjacks of North Tonawanda on Senior night by scores of 25-16, 23-25 (oopsies) 25-15 (that's more like it) and 25-17 to send the Jacks back to the forest to cut some more lumber.
As is often the case, your Senior Spartans led the way.  Alex Chukhanenko contributed 6 service aces, along with 13 kills, while Jon Zawada recorded 41 assists, 3 service aces, and a thunderous solo block.  Finally, the current Broadway Knitting Mills Spartan athlete of the week Evan Saunders came up huge once again for the Spartans, putting down 25 kills on 32 attempts for an absolutely ridiculous .781 hitting percentage.
With the win, the Spartans finished the regular season 11-6 overall, and 9-3 in league play.  They will host a home quarterfinal playoff game next Wednesday, November 2nd at 6:00 PM, with the opponent to be determined this coming Wednesday.  Clear your calendar and help root your Spartans on to, potentially, their most successful season since the inception of the program.  (10/25)

    10/20/22

Starpoint Varisity swim team If you see Allison Smith today, please join me in congratulating her. Last night, at the final meet of the season against Lockport, she placed first AND broke the Starpoint pool record in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:10:37. Your hard work in your swimming career paid off! Nice job.

    10/18/22

The Girls' Varsity Swim Team will be hosting a Pink Meet tomorrow, Wednesday the 19th. This meet against Lockport will be a fun event to support the Lock In Committee and collect donations for Roswell in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  If you see a swimmer and would like to donate even $1, ask them to sign their pink swim cap and do so! Any donations are appreciated.

*44 minutes and 40 seconds, start to finish, in real-time.  That's all the time your Spartan Varsity Spikers required to put the Will South Billy Goats out to pasture last night.  I could give you all the stats, but it would take longer than the match did, so suffice it to say, the Spartan Spikers wrapped up their regular season in style.  They have two non-league matches remaining: One tonight @ Clarence, and their dig pink/Senior Night match next Monday night.  Please make plans to come to the Senior game to bid a fond adieu to our Seniors and root them into a deep playoff run!  (10/18)

*This past Saturday, your Girls' JV and Varsity XC Teams traveled to Alden to run in the annual Alden Bulldog Stampede while getting a feel for the sectionals course where, in approximately 2 and ½ weeks, the top 7 girls will be in the massive showdown in the race for states.  Placing in the top 10 were Shannon Zugelder in the Varsity Race and Gurmann Kaur in JV.   As a team, placing 7th overall, your girls managed to score 184 points, beating their top competitor for states, Hamburg, once again, by a whole 40 points!!!!   Next, they will travel to Grover Cleveland for their last dual meet of the season looking to further their win streak to 6-0 by defeating the Amherst  Tigers and Will South Billies.  Good luck ladies!  (10/18)

    10/14/22

Your Varsity Field Hockey Team had a tough loss Wednesday night against Williamsville North 2-1.  A huge shoutout goes to our fantastic goalie, Liv Terranova.  She saved 18 out of the 20 shots she faced.  Liv also faced a penalty stroke (her first one this season) and saved it!  She has been such a strong part of our team!!  Tonight is senior night against HEA.  The senior ceremony starts at 4:00 P.M. and the game starts at 5:00!  It is the last regular season home game so come out and show your support!!  (10/14)

*The JV Girls' Soccer Team secured their final league win last night, shutting Amherst out 2-0.  Offensive players Ashley Mainstone and Mya Dorgan were a dynamic duo up top, each swapping a goal and an assist.  Arianna Hamilton had the shutout in net once again.  The Lady Spartans played a fast-paced, aggressive game to finish at the top in league play.  Our final non-league game of the season will be played against Wilson at home tonight at 5:00.  (10/14)

    10/13/22

Another big-time match brought forth another big-time result for your Spartan Spikers last evening. They commanded the Hamburg Bulldogs, and their fans, while in their own kennel, to sit and stay in four sets: 18-25, 25-17, 25-19, and 25-20.  While Junior D'Angelo D'Aloise recorded 18 kills for the match, the Senior Captain trio of Alex Chukhanenko (three service aces, four kills, and countless high IQ plays), Evan Saunders (16 kills, almost all of which came when the team really needed them) and Jon Zawada (37 assists, two service aces and a partridge in a pear tree) led by example.  Their inspirational play inspired teammates Raistlin Rowcroft, Hugh Adams, and Dmitry Zhilevich to step up their efforts and contribute to another big-time victory in a big-time match.   The team hopes that you do not have plans this coming Friday night as we welcome our cross-town rival Lockport Lions to our gym for a non-league battle with a team currently ranked in the Top 10 in WNY.  We would like all of you to come out and see us make our bid for the Top 10.  See you Friday evening!  (10/13)

    10/12/22

Golf Team....Yesterday Senior Drew Beiter, Junior Joe Muscarella, and sophomores Tyler Grimm and Nick Prezioso competed in the ECIC championship and sectional qualifier.  The wind and fast greens made for extremely tough playing conditions.  Tyler and Nick played extremely well given the conditions and have now qualified for the sectional match in May. Tyler shot 88 and finished tied for 15 out of 60. Nick shot 89 and finished tied for 19.  Drew finished 31st shooting 92. Joe finished 41st and shot a 94. I couldn't be more proud of the way the boys played yesterday and  this season  Great job this season to the whole team.  Party details to follow.  (10/12)

*Last night was one of the races your Girls' JV and Varsity Cross Country teams have been training very hard for.  The Hamburg Bulldogs have beaten them at every invitational this year but your girls didn’t let that intimidate them.  They trained and gave all they got last night on their home course while honoring their seniors Hannah Laubacker and Ava Wohlleber.  Despite not running until an hour after they were supposed to, they beat the bulldogs 25-32.  Scoring points for your Spartans were Shannon Zugelder taking first, followed by Sophia Waliszewski (4th), Meagan Zupo (5th), Annabelle Pacouloutte (6th), and Hannah Laubacker (9th).  Although they sent them home with the loss this time, they will still be working hard to beat them once again at the Sectional meet in a few weeks in the race for the States! Good job today ladies!  (10/12)

*Last night your Boys' JV and Varsity Cross Country teams pulled off a massive upset against the Hamburg Bulldogs, just beating them by 3 points.  After being beaten by Hamburg in every invitational this year, your boys put in the hard work and dedication to get the W.  Point scorers during the meet includes Peyton Spatorico coming in 1st place, with Gavin Farell, and Frankie Payne coming in behind. The real winners of this race are DAN PREISCH and Tim Lukasik, who helped officially seal the victory for Starpoint.  They worked hard this meet and are preparing for the intimidating Alden invitational this Saturday where they will show the section who is really boss. Great job Boys!  (10/12)

*The Girls' JV Field Hockey had another triumphant victory last night against Pioneer on Starpoint turf.  Natalie Prezioso scored 3 outstanding goals with assists from Sammi Latini, Emma Coughlin, and Maddie Walby.  Maddie Walby scored an additional goal with an assist from Prezioso.  Along with these goals were some extraordinary plays made by Lilly Cook, Paige Andruschat, Nina Briggs, Lilly Curione, and eighth grader Mihla Smith.  A phenomenal game played by your Lady Spartans, winning the game 4-1 and adding another win to their 6-3 record.  (10/12)

*Congratulations to the Girls' Varsity Soccer Team on their 8th win of the season, a 1-0 victory over Hamburg.  After a short layoff, the girls struggled to find consistent play.  In the 2nd half, they picked it up and super 8th grader Grace Crissman scored after a spectacular play and assist from Heidi House.   Berk Messer continued to stand on her head in net and was easily the MVP of the game.   The girls finish the regular season with matches on Thursday and Friday at home and they’d love a student section to cheer them on with playoff seedings on the line. (10/12)

*Let's keep the positive atmosphere of Spirit Week alive!  That's what your Spartan Spikers have decided to do, and did so first with a straight-set victory over the Amherst Tigers last Friday in straight sets 25-18, 25-17 and 25-23.  Last night, the Spartans avenged an early season loss to Williamsville East by dousing the Flames last night with scores of 25-18, 25-14, and 26-24 in the last set, just to make things interesting.
During those two matches, the Spartans were led from the service line by D'Angelo D'Aloise's 15 total service aces and 22 kills.  Senior Captain Evan Saunders contributed 17 kills in those matches, and Senior Captain Jon Zawada offered up 55 assists over the six triumphant sets.  The contributions made by the leadership of Senior Captain Alex Chukhanenko kept the team together and helped them win in spite of having two starters on the bench due to injury.  The Super Sophomore tandem of Hugh Adams and Dmitry Zhilevich sealed up the middle and put their marks on these total team victories.
The team hopes to keep the good times rolling tonight in Hamburg.  If you see a Spartan Spiker in the halls, give 'em a sincere "atta boy" and wish them the best for this evening. (10/12)

    10/7/22

The boys modified volleyball team won their match last night against Williamsville south, winning three sets to two, great job by all players

    10/6/22

*Your Varsity Spartan Spikers lost an extremely tough match last night in five sets while on the road at Sweet Home High School.  Even with a had-to-see-to-be-believed comeback in the first set, they could not sustain the momentum and ultimately dropped the match by scores of 27-25, 18-25, 15-25, 25-21, and 9-15.
Led by the attacking of Senior Captain Evan Saunder's 21 kills and Junior D'Angelo D'Aloise's 16 kills, the Spartans could not overcome their 15 service errors and 21 hitting errors on the night.
Tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 PM, your Spartan Spikers return to their home court with fistfuls of anger and are planning to take it out on the Tigers of Amherst High School.  We are asking our faithful boosters to come on out before the homecoming football game and help us tame the Tigers before rooting the gridiron Spartans to victory and making homecoming week that much more special.
    Your agenda is:
    Boys' Volleyball @ 4:30
    Football @ 7:00
    Do not miss it

    10/5/22

*Your Varsity Girls' Tennis Squad played their final match last night, beating the Williamsville South Billies 3-2.   Anna Solar played well at 1st singles along with Arianna Reynolds at 3rd singles.  Ari would dominate, giving up only 1 game in 2 sets!  Also winning at 2nd doubles were Emma Hobel and Gianna Huttenmair.  They won in 2 sets as well!  1st doubles duo won their first set but succumbed to a very tough 1st doubles team from South. To seal the deal in a 2 - 2 tie break was, yet again, the freshman PHENOM Braelyn Szpilewski.  She would win the first set 6-4, lose the second in a tie break, only to stomp her opponent in the 3rd set 6-2.  Way to seal the win BRAY!  Great job ladies on a great season, finishing 4th in the ECIC II division.  Next we have the ECIC Tournament!  Let's Go SPARTANS!  (10/5)

*On Senior Night this past Friday, the Girls' Varsity Soccer Team scored an 8-0 victory over West Seneca East.  Berk Messer and Mattie Adamo split the shutout.  Senior defender Emily Milleville pitched in with a PK goal.  The Crissman sisters continued to sizzle, and Bella Scott and Mia Giamberdino chipped in on the scoring.  And further congratulations to the team on their 4-1 win over Sweet Home.  Nora Crissman had an assist, Bella Scott had a goal and an assist.  Mattie Adamo scored off a sweet effort from Madison Mallone.  Liv Bugbee, coming off an injury, assured Brenna Bodekker’s goal.  The girls are off until next week when they play 3 games in 4 nights to cap off the regular season.  (10/5)

    10/4/22

Your Lady Spartan Tennis team celebrated senior night last night with a victory over the Sweethome Panthers 5 - 0.   At 1st singles Anna Solar dominated, winning without giving up a game in 2 sets.  Thanks for being an awesome captain, Solar!  At 2nd singles, freshman phenom Braelyn Szpilewski won in a similar fashion.  3rd singles were dominated by Arianna Reynolds who gave up only 1 game.  At 1st dubz, Ella Gielow and Emma Lichtenberger fought off a valiant opponent and won 6-4 , 6-3.  Finally, at 2nd doubles, Emma Hobel and Gianna Huttenmaier battled their way through a tough match, winning 6-4, 7-5!  Lastly,  Lauren Talma battled at singles for senior night winning 6-0 as well.  Great win ladies, congrats seniors, go Spartans!  Pump it up... (10/4)

*Last night your Varsity Lady Spartans Field Hockey team pulled off a 3-1 win over Orchard Park!  Scoring were Quinn Hurley, Avery Cardinal, and Natalie Lawrence.  Assists were by Morgan Hamm and Quinn. Great plays on defense made by Ella Kenyon and AnaSophia Lee.  The team played superbly together and are headed on the road again this Wednesday to play the Lancaster Legends!   (10/4)

*One of the ironies of volleyball is you can outscore a team on a given night, but still lose the match.  This is what befell your Varsity Spartan Spikers last evening when they took on the Marauders of St. Joe's in a highly entertaining, yet ultimately disappointing match for the Spartan faithful.  Although Starpoint outscored St. Joe's 109 - 98, they lost the match in five sets by scores of 24-26, 25-17, 25-15, 23-25, and 12-15 in the fifth and deciding set.  Once again, the Spartans were led by D'Angelo D'aloise's 22 kills and senior captain Jon Zawada's 34 assists.
Nevertheless, the mighty Spartan Spikers will return to the floor tomorrow night at Sweet Home before returning to Starpoint Friday night at 4:30 to battle the Tigers of Amherst High School.

    10/3/22

Boys who finished with a new personal record include Peyton Spatorico, Gavin Farell, Frankie Payne, Tim Lukasik, Brandon Klak, Nolan Armitage, Jacob Herbst, Talon Barone, and Brenon O’neil.  After racing a fun and challenging Mcquaid course, this afternoon they travel to Basset Park to face Will East in a very intense matchup. Amazing job Boys!

*Your Spartan Ladies Tennis Squad put on a show yesterday afternoon, beating the Sweethome Panthers 5-0.  Anna Solar won in straight sets 6 -0 6-0 AT 1ST SINGLES.  Braelyn Szpilewski won in the same fashion at 2nd singles.   Arianna Reynolds won in 2, losing only 1 game at 3rd singles, while both doubles teams (Ella Gielow/Emma  Lichtenberger and Lauren Talma/Emma Hobel) won-handedly as well.  Just an all-around great effort in the exhibition too!  Great job ladies.  P U M P IT UP!  (9/30)

*Your Varsity Spartan Spikers do not care if it is a league or non-league foe who challenges them.  They continue to take care of business.
Last night they lanced the visiting St. Francis Red Raiders in straight sets by scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-17.  D'Angelo D'Aloise led the offense with 10 kills and 3 service aces, while Senior Captains Evan Saunders and Alex Chukhanenko contributed 4 and 3 kills respectively.  Jon Zawada continued his solid, steady play with 17 assists, while sophomore sensation Colby Bashor contributed 3 solo blocks, two service aces, and a kill to round out the Spartan attack.  The win pushed the Spartans' record to 6-2 overall, and they are within striking distance of a first place in ECIC Division 2A.
They have earned their weekend of rest before heading on the road next Monday to the hallowed halls of St.Joseph's Collegiate Institute to do battle with the Marauders.  It will be a battle.  (9/30)

    9/29/22

Playing with Joe was Reid Marriner, who scored a hole in one, or so he says.    The Spartans are now in the waiting game to see if they qualify for the team championship.  Several golfers have now qualified for the ECIC championship as well. Great job guys.  (9/29)

*Last night, your Varsity Spartan Spikers put up a total, and I mean a total team effort, putting the Williamsville South Billy Goats out to pasture in straight sets 25-7, 25-18 and 25-15.  Leading the way from the service line were Juniors D'Angelo D'Aloise and Michael Cyr with 5 and 4 service aces respectively.  The attack was led by Sophomore Dmitry Zhilevich's 7 kills, but overall 9 of the 13 Spartans contributed at least one kill to the effort.  The aforementioned Cyr also led the team, dishing out 14 assists.  The win raised the Spartans league record to 5-2, putting them firmly in the race for league supremacy with half of the regular season in the rearview mirror.    Tonight, the Spartans face a tough non-league challenge when the Red Raiders of St. Francis of Athol Springs leaves the security of Erie County and venture into the rugged backwoods of Niagara County to take their chances against the pride of Pendleton.  JV @ 5:00, Varsity @ 6:30.  We would love to get the gym rocking, so make plans to come watch the Spartans do their thing!   (9/29)

They had many breakaways together, moving all the way up the field. A great game was played by Alexandra Martorana on forward! The Spartans are looking to bounce back next Monday at OP.  (9/29)

Last night, the Girls’ JV Field Hockey had a remarkable win against Lancaster. Emma Coughlin scored a goal in the first quarter, with Natalie Prezioso scoring the second goal, assisted by Alexa Johnson.  Natalie rushed up the field to score another goal, but instead barreled into the goalie, knocking her down.  Despite the hard hit she came out of it unscathed, and the girls finished their game with a 2-1 victory!  (9/27)

*If ever there was a boys' volleyball match to watch, it was last night between the Spartans from West Seneca East and your beloved Starpoint Spartan Spikers.  Going into the match, West Seneca was unbeaten in league play and ranked #10 in WNY.   After a few hours, that all changed.  Your Spartans claimed a hard-earned victory in an amazing five-set match by scores of 25-23, 25-16, 17-25, 22-25, and the thrill a minute fifth set 15-13, highlighted by an honor call at a pivotal moment, which the Spartans pushed through to win the match the right way!   Starpoint was led by the balanced attack of Alex Chukhanenko (11 kills, 2 service aces) Evan Saunders (12 kills, 2 service aces), and D'Angelo D'Aloise (19 kills, 3 service aces), all of whom were set up by senior captain Jon Zawada's 45 assists and four service aces.  Huge, timely kills and blocks were also provided by Jakob Stolzenburg, and Colby Bashor, making the victory a complete team effort.  C'mon out tomorrow night and watch your Spartans pen the Billies from Williamsville South.  JV @ 5:00, Varsity @ 6:30.

The Falcons went back up by 2 scoring next to make it 3-1. The 3rd period was all Spartans.  Sophomore Matt Myhalenko and Junior Will Mainstone both put in goals to tie up the game. Senior defenseman Luke Blas would make a huge play for the Spartans drawing a penalty and setting up the Spartans in overtime. With the power play Will Mainstone cashed in and gave the Spartans the win in overtime. Junior Justin Bull also played a huge part in the win with 3 assists, including the game tying and game winning goals. Overall the game was a “had-to-be-there-moment” with Bobby Taylor leading the way on defense and Richie Gareau in net. Big win for the Spartans on opening night!  (12/9)

Congratulations to Cross Country team members Nate Adams, Peyton Spatorico, and Shannon Zugelder, who competed in the Checkers High School invitational at Knox Farm on Saturday.  A memorable season finally comes to a close over Thanksgiving weekend, as Nate Adams represents the Distance Gang at the Nike Cross Country Regional meet at Bowdoin Park, near New York City.  Good luck Nate!  (11/22)

*Adrianna Martino competed in the NYSPHAA State Swimming Championship on Friday at Ithaca College. She competed in her 100 breast stroke and finished out an incredible swimming career. If you see Addy please congratulate her on this awesome accomplishment!   (11/22)

    11/8/21

Although it was a sunny day outside on Saturday, the gloom of a season ending loss fell upon the Boys Volleyball squad, with a straight set loss to West Seneca West.  The Spartans ran out of steam against the highly skilled West Seneca squad, so although the end of a season is never a welcome thing, the Spartans completed a challenging, yet ultimately successful season with their character intact.

Congratulations to:  Freshman Colby Bashor, Sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise, Juniors Alexander Chuckhanenko, Sam Parise, Aiden Zimmerman, Jon Zawada, Evan Saunders and Seniors David Pilecki, Solomon Glynn and Senior Captains David Prozapas and Justin Gerhard.   Your contributions to the team this year and overcoming an outrageous number of injuries will not soon be forgotten.  You represented all the best things about Spartan Spirit, and Coach Spitler was honored to coach this outstanding group of men.  Only 287 days until next season starts...GET READY!!  (11/8)

*Congratulations to Cross Country team members Ben Olson, Franklin Payne, Jackson Griesmer, Liam Keelty, Nate Adams, Peyton Spatorico, and Tim Lukasik. On Saturday, they put in a total team effort to finish 2nd out of 14 teams at the Section 6 Championships, earning the title of Class B1 Champions for the first time in 10 years! Another congratulations goes to the team of Ava Wohlleber, Kristina Valnarov, Lyndzie Wagner, Meagan Zupo, Shannon Zugelder, Skylar Berube, and Sophia Waliszewski. They left it all on the course and finished 4th in a close race with three other state-ranked teams. Their average time was almost 40 seconds faster than last year's Sectional meet. Kristina, Ben, Liam, and Tim ran personal bests on a challenging 5k course. Finally, best wishes to Nate and Shannon, who both finished in the top 5 places and will represent Starpoint at the State meet in 5 days. The future is bright, as the boys return 6 and the girls return 5 of their top 7 runners for next year. Congratulations to ALL members of the Distance Gang on their efforts this season!

    11/3/21

Sometimes, it's just a fight between two teams who do not want to lose.  Last night at Sweet Home, it was just that.  An old fashioned volleyball donnybrook.  And what a fight it was.  Your Boys Spartan Spikers came out firing, and kept it up all night.  They took the first two sets 25-23 (eek!) 25-13 (smack down), but didn't put the Panthers away, as they fought back and took the next two sets from the Spartans 25-22 and 25-22.  Then it went to a fifth set.  Your Spartans showed what they were capable of, regrouping in the venue where about a month and a half ago, they dropped a five set decision to these same Panthers.  That was then, this is now.  Paced by Justin Gerhard's 42 assists, the Spartans took set #5 by a score of 15-10, and punched their ticket to the ECIC Division D2A semi finals against West Seneca West this coming Saturday.  Sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise chalked up 18 kills and 5 service aces, and junior outside hitter Evan Saunders piled up 12 kills and an ace.  Senior captain David Prozapas contributed 14 kills and 3 solo blocks, and with freshman Colby Bashor, and senior Solomon Glynn adding timely kills and blocks, all that was left was for junior libero to clean up on defense with 22 digs to seal the victory for Starpoint.   Congrats men!  Outstanding work.

    11/2/21

On Saturday, the Cross Country teams traveled to East Aurora with 24 other schools for a very muddy ECIC Championships. In the JV race, Hannah Laubacker, Sage Pohl, Marlea Petroziello, Madelyn Schmidt, and Michaela Staskiewicz knocked off a deep Williamsville North team to finish third, led by a top-10 finish from Laubacker. The Boys JV team of Alex Rudnick, Nick Allen, Branden Farnham, Charlie Hykelma, and Josh Szymanksi also placed in the top 5 teams.   In another close Varsity race, the Lady Spartans finished 10th overall and 2nd in the league, 10 points behind a strong Amherst team. Shannon Zugelder finished third overall in a very deep field, while Meagan Zupo and Kristina Valnarov earned spots on the ECIC 2nd team.  Many athletes have stepped up for the Lady Spartans in tough situations this season.  On a day with many slips and falls, it was Skylar Berube and Lyndzie Wagner coming through to close out the scoring.  Even on an off day, the gentlemen put in a gritty performance to finish 8th overall and an undefeated 10-0 in ECIC Division 2 to become ECIC division champions for the first time in over 10 years. Goliath and Spatz finished in the top 25 overall, joining Trevor Lawrence on the ECIC 1st team. Louie lost both shoes in the mud and ran most of the race barefoot!  He still finished fast enough to join Salva Dut and Breadman on the ECIC 2nd team, with Jake the snake only a few seconds behind.  This Friday, seven young men and women will return to East Aurora to race for a Sectional title, and a chance to travel to Chenango Falls for the State meet. Best of luck Distance Gang!

    10/30/21

Girl's Varsity Swim team is starting to swim in the final championship meets of the season. They swam in their Class B meet on Wednesday evening. *The Boys Varsity Spartan Spikers were nothing if not efficient last evening to open the playoffs this season.  The welcomed the Bulldogs from Kenmore East into the gym, then promptly escorted them out the gym, in a gentlemanly fashion of course, by scores of 25-11, 25-10 and 25-14.  Super Sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise, led the Spartans with 11 kills and Justin Gerhard once again made the offense go, dishing out 29 assists over the course of the evening.   With the win, Starpoint moves on to the next round where they will travel to Sweet Home to try to tame the Panthers on their home court.  So, rack up your frequent flyer miles by going to Sweet Home tonight to root the Girls' volleyballers onto victory then, book your return trip for next Tuesday to watch the Boys do the same.  #OneStapoint!

    10/28/21

*Last night, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team captured this pre-quarterfinal win against the Hamburg Bulldogs. The Starpoint Spartans started off red hot and finished the first set with three aces from Alexis Lamm putting the Spartans on top 25-22. The second set was just as dominating for the Spartans. Morgan Bennett and Ashleigh Schreader paved the way for the offense and led them to a 25-18 win in the second set. The Bulldogs did not let up going into sets 3 and 4, winning to the sets 25-18 and 25-21. The Lady Spartans went into the 5th set hungry to win. Emily Mielcarek and Olivia Boswell ran the offense allowing Sarah Barnum, Madison Beckman, and Carly Dell'Oso to earn consecutive kills. Emma Browka and Haley Hickson maintained a locked-in defense,  "passing dimes"  on serve to receive to help lead the ladies to a 25-19 victory in the fifth set. Congratulations on a great team win! The team's quarterfinal game is Friday @ Sweet Home at 6pm. Come out and support your Lady Spartans!  (10/28)

    10/26/21

*Congrats to the Varsity Field Hockey team on their playoff  win over East Aurora/Holland.  Alex Martorana scored off of Riley Hamm’s pass in the 3rd quarter.  The Lady Spartans played great defense and Olivia Terranova earned her sixth shutout of the season.  The girls play on Thursday at 4pm at Will North.  (10/26)

    10/25/21

*Congratulations to the JV and Varsity Cheerleaders on winning 2nd place at the first ECIC Game Day Competition! Great job ladies!   (10/25)

*The Girls Varsity Swim team crushed ECICs on Saturday morning. As a team, the girls placed 3rd overall in our division of 9 teams. All of our girls who qualified and attended shaved significant time off of their individual events. Standouts included; Allison Smith placing 2nd overall in the 200 IM and 3rd in the breaststroke.   Addy Martino placed 1st overall in the breaststroke and 3rd in the 200 IM. Megan Balko placed 4th overall in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100 free. Rachel Stoelting placed 4th in the 100 fly. You girls made Starpoint proud!  (10/25)

*On Saturday, you could say, "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times" for your Varsity Boys Spartan Spikers, but in reverse order.  After a poor start to the Grand Island tournament, the Spartans finally began to believe in themselves, sweeping Williamsville South, and the #5 ranked team in WNY and defending ECIC Div 2A champs, Grand Island Vikings.  They then marched over Williamsville East and Sweet Home , before falling to the eventual tournament champs, West Seneca West.  Spectacular performances were put in by Solly Glynn, David Prozapas, Evan Saunders and DeAngelo D'Aloise, while libero Jon Zawada was named to the all tournament team.  This coming Thursday night, Starpoint will be hosting the Kenmore East Bulldogs in the first round of ECIC sectional playoffs, so mark your calendar and help push us along in the playoffs.  We really hope to see you there.

    10/21/21

The Boys Varsity Soccer Team says thank you to Mrs. Wilson and Mr. Dell'Oso for everything they did to make this season a successful and memorable one.  The Team had a successful season despite losing the quarterfinal game last night to Amherst in Penalty kicks. The Varsity boys did Starpoint proud by coming back from a 1-0 deficit to tie the game with Brady Hathaway scoring the only goal in regular time for Starpoint. In the end the game was decided sadly by Penalty kicks with Amherst coming out on top.  This was an emotional game and the last game for our Seniors who will be missed. The juniors, sophomores and freshmen want to wish Trevor Pollow, Anthony Ginnane, Justin Petricca, Bobby Taylor and Owen Kiesman the best for the future. Thanks to all our friends and families that came out to cheer us on.  (10/21)

*The Girls Varsity Field Hockey team beat East Aurora 1-0.   The goal was scored by Jaimie Fraass and assisted by Morgan Hamm.  Olivia Terranova had her fourth shut out of the season.  The entire team played great!  The girls are currently 4-2 in the league and 5-9 overall.  Congrats Ladies!   (10/21)

*Last night the Girls JV Field Hockey got an outstanding win against Holland East Aurora for their final game of the year.  Four goals were scored by Natalee Lawrence and two were scored by Jordan Duncan with an end score of 6-1.  Great effort and awesome plays were made by everyone as this concluded the season with a 9 and 3 record.  A phenomenal season was had by all.  Amazing job ladies!

    10/20/21

*It's going to take more than a little mud to stop the Distance Gang.  Both Cross Country teams put five runners in the top eight places to knock off Williamsville East and Williamsville South.  Nate Adams and Shannon Zugelder remained undefeated in league competition.  Peyton Spatorico has PR'ed in every meet so far and showed no signs of slowing down yesterday, picking up another second place.  Ben Olsen, Franklin Payne, and Liam Keelty made big moves in the last mile to pick up key places for the boys.  In her first race in over a month, Kristina Valnarov finished fourth in a PR, followed by Meagan Zupo, Ava Wohlleber, and Sophia Waliszewski.  Also running personal bests for 3 miles were Jackson Gresimer, Ethan Full, Jack Krawczyk, Griffin Schmidt, Lyndzie Wagner, and - last but not least - Annabelle Pacouloute, who just came back from a stress fracture!   The boys are now 5-0 with 5 dominant wins and the girls are 4-1.  Hill Sandwich and nine other days of training separate the Spartans from a championship season, starting with a shot at a league title: Next Saturday, 10 AM, at East Aurora High School.  (10/19)

*It was Senior night last night for your Varsity Spartan Spikers David Pilecki, Solomon Glynn, Justin Gerhard and David Prozapas.  Additionally, the Spartan Spikers had a score to settle with the Panthers from Sweet Home high school, and settle it they did.  After dropping a five set match to Sweet Home after Junior outside hitter Evan Saunders went down back in mid September, the Spartans made short work of the Panthers, taming them in straight sets 25-21, 25-20 and 26-24.  Starpoint was led by the aforementioned Evan Saunders 11 kills, David Prozpas' 10 kills and DeAngelo D'Aloise's 8 kills, while Justin Gerhard paced the Spartans with 35 assists.  The Spartans are looking to settle one final regular season score tonight at Williamsville East.  JV @ 5:00, and Varsity @6:30.  We sure would love to see some friendly faces in what promises to be a hostile environment.

    10/19/21

Congratulations to the Lady Spartans Varsity Field Hockey team as they raised $1800.00 dollars for breast cancer research.  The money will be going towards the Lock In to Lock Out Cancer total.  High praise also goes to our Lady Spartans as we recognize these Seniors from our team:  Lindsey Blount, Grace DiaPaul, Riley Hamm, Natalie Sidoni, and Zoe Wagner.  Our Lady Spartans beat Sweet Home 4-0 with Alex Martorana scoring all four goals. Riley Hamm, Morgan Hamm and Natalie Sidoni had assists on the goals.  Lindsey Blount, Quinn Hurley, and Anna Floreano did a great job at midfield.

    10/18/21

Friday night the Boys Varsity Soccer team ended their regular season with a tie against visiting Alden. Although the poor weather determined the game’s score line it definitely did not determine the better team and had the game been allowed to continue the boys would have come out on top as they pressed Alden from the kick off, with your Spartans hitting the crossbar and missing a header early on before the weather delay. The game saw the return of Trevor Pollow to the line up.  The boys go on to the playoffs with a quarterfinal game at home vs. Amherst on Wednesday, October 20th at 5:00 P.M.  Starpoint is 2 & 0 vs. Amherst this season, but could use the help of the 12th man to make it 3 & 0. So come on out and support your boys in their first Quarterfinal appearance in 3 years.  (10/18)

    10/15/21

The Varsity Field Hockey team played a tough game against the Amherst Tigers.  They secured a goal early in the first quarter.  The goal was scored by Morgan Hamm unassisted off of a corner.  The Lady Spartans were able to hold the Tigers to secure the win. Great defensive play goes to Zoe Wagner as well as Mara Beiter.  Congrats to Olivia Terranova on her second shut out.  The Lady Spartans field hockey team played Iroquois on Tuesday.   Iroquois scored first but the Lady Spartans tied the game in the first quarter with the goal scored by Quinn Hurley assisted off of Morgan Hamm on a corner.  Unfortunately, the Lady Spartans lost to Iroquois but stand out players in the game went to Lindsey Blount and Quinn Hurley.  The Varsity Field Hockey team lost a hard fought battle to Hamburg last night.  The Spartans passed the ball extremely well across the entire field.  The lone goal was scored by Riley Hamm off of Morgan Hamm's corner shot. Hamburg scored early in the 1st quarter and again in the 2nd quarter.  The Lady Spartans played together as a team continuously and should be very proud of their play.  Standout players go to Anna Floreano and Alex Martorana.  Their next game is Monday October 18th against Sweet Home. This game is Senior night, please come out and support your Lady Spartans!!!  (10/15)

*Last night, your Boys' Varsity Spartan Spikers returned to the court for the first time since September 15th with the entire team (except for one) available to play, many of whom were returning from lengthy injury hiatuses, and they were ready to play.  Too bad for Hamburg High School.  Working their way back into game shape, the Spartans tamed the Bulldogs in straight sets 25-19, 25-22, and 25-17.  Justin Gerhard's 33 assists were evenly distributed between sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise (9 kills) , junior Evan Saunders (11 kills) and Senior Captain David Prozapas (9 kills).  Saunders and D'Aloise also chipped in with four and three service aces, respectively, while junior libero Jon Zawada earned the Caterpillar player of the match, firing up his excavator to the tune of 22 digs (unofficially).  The Spartans wrap up their regular season next week with a home match Tuesday against the Sweet Home Panthers and a road match at Williamsville East.  Those two teams both took advantage of the depleted Spartan lineups, so you can bet your Spartan Spikers are ready to settle that score.  Be sure to make plans to come to our Senior Night match to say thanks to our seniors David Pilecki, Solomon Glynn, David Prozapas and Justin Gerhard.  Gametime Tuesday will be 6:30.   (10/15)

*Congratulations to the Girls JV Soccer Team on their thrilling victory over Williamsville South, 2-1.  Grace Crissman scored two more goals leading the Spartans to their 6th victory of the season and first against Williamsville South.  The entire team was awarded the Spartan Helmet Player of the Game.  Gabby Knoebel, Brianna Ginnane, Lily Krentz and Mia Giamberdino were stellar on defense. Ari Hamilton played great in net. The girls finish off the season with a non-league tilt against Sacred Heart tomorrow.  (10/15)

    10/14/21

The Girls Varsity Soccer team had another exciting win against West Seneca East with a final score of 5-2 last night. Goals were scored by Kelsey Schepis, Liv Bugbee, Rachel Dickey and two by Gina Krentz! Jenna Clark, Bella Scott and Emily Millville were all active with assists and keeping the game at a healthy lead.

    10/13/21

Congratulations to the JV Girls Soccer Team.  Even though they lost 2-1 to Williamsville East, that is a wonderful result against the best team the girls have faced all season.  Kaelan Bevilacqua was stellar in net and she split the Spartan Helmet with Nora Crissman who played tough all game long. Grace Crissman scored on a PK.  Bri, Gabby, Mia, Lily and Marlee all played splendidly on defense!  (10/13)

*Your Lady Spartans Varsity Soccer had another great win last night against West Seneca East with a 4-2 final. Goals were scored by Liv Bugbee, Rowan Schmidt, Bella Scott as well as Gina Krentz who's assist came from Madison Mallone. Berkley Messer kept the team in a safe lead by making some great saves! The team plays West Seneca East again tonight at home so let's hope for a back to back victory!  (10/13)

*Yesterday, the Cross Country teams took care of business in their dual meet against Sweet Home in two blowout wins. Meagan Zupo looked strong on the way to winning her first Varsity Race.  Ava Wohlleber finished second, and the tight pack of Sophia Waliszewski, Norah Marriner, Skylar Berube, and Gurmann Kaur sealed the deal. The boys are back at full strength and looking dangerous. Nate Adams, Peyton Spatorico, Franklin Payne, Ben Olsen, and Liam Keelty swept the top 5 spots in the race.  Great efforts to everyone, and shout-out to Jackson Greismer for finally breaking through with a PR!  The boys are undefeated, and the girls are 2-1 in league competition.  Catch the Distance Gang in action next Tuesday at 5:00 P.M. as they take on Williamsville East at home.  (10/13)

*Yesterday the Spartan Golf Team had 4 of it's members compete at the ECIC Championship/Sectional Qualifier.  Sean Schifferle, Drew Beiter, Joe Muscarella, and Tyler Grimm played great golf on an extremely tough track.  Culminating in a tie for 19th was Sean Schifferle who has now qualified for Sectionals in the spring.  This will be Sean's first trip to sectionals and it took an amazing round of 83 to qualify.  Great job yesterday guys and all season.  (10/13)

    10/12/21

*The Cross Country team celebrated eleven awesome Seniors with a double win over Pioneer.  Both teams put five runners in the top seven places.  Ben Olson returned to form with a PR and a fourth-place finish.  Brandon Clarke, Jackson Greismer, Jack Krawczyk, and Griffin Schmidt also didn't let a little mud stop them from running personal bests. For the Lady Spartans, when one runner goes down, another one steps up. The attitude that brought them a Sectional runner-up finish last year will be on display this Saturday, as both teams travel to Alden for the Bulldog Stampede.  (10/12)

*Last Saturday, the Cross Country team had a huge day at the Alden Bulldog Stampede. Of the twenty-seven runners who competed, twenty ran lifetime personal bests. Sixteen ran faster for 5k than they did at the McQuaid Invitational for an even three miles. Here are just a few highlights: Both Nate Adams and Peyton Spatorico finished in the top 20% of the field, under 5:40 per mile pace. Franklin Payne ran a 90 second PR, one week after not being able to race. Tim Lukasik also ran almost a 90 second PR. Nolan Armitage decided to run the varsity race at the last minute...and then also ran a 90 second PR. On the girls' side: Shannon Zugelder took 6th overall. Meagan Zupo knocked a minute off her time in one week. Sophia Waliszewski, Skylar Berube, Gurmann Kaur, Norah Marriner, and Ava Wohlleber also helped bring the ladies within nine points of their rivals from Grand Island. And Marlea Petroziello has run three PRs, three weeks in a row. And a HUGE  "Congratulations to Peyton Spatorico for being named a Buffalo News Runner of the Week!"  In three weeks, the Spartans will return to the same course stronger, faster, and ready to play the dark horse at the conference championship meet.   (10/12)

*Last Thursday the Boys Varsity Soccer Team travelled to the Tigers den to face Amherst.  Even though the Boys are bruised and hurting with key players out with injuries the boys battled with Amherst.  The Spartans scored first with Anthony Ginnane slipping the ball past Amherst keeper in the 25th minute. Amherst tied it up forcing a double overtime. Cohen Vogel played a through ball to Brady Hathaway in the dying seconds of the last overtime putting Brady on a breakaway which ended with a goal and the win.  Starpoint played with Aiden Prince in net while Travis Pollow recovers from a concussion and brother, Trevor Pollow, his backup, is done for the season with a torn MCL.  Prince made late game winning saves to help Starpoint get the win.  The boys played with heart. It was a great defensive game by all!

*Congratulations to the Girls JV Soccer Team on their victory over Iroquois last Thursday, 6-3.  Grace Crissman scored four, you heard that right, four goals!  Matty Adamo had a goal and an assist, and Becca Danwin scored as well.  Kaelan Bevilacqua had a steady game in goal.  Olivia Eberz, Talulah May, Madeline Levelle and Lauren Ceno have practiced hard all season and earned and played quality minutes in the game.  (10/12)

Liv Bugbee started off the scoring with a Penalty Kick followed by goals from Rowan Schmidt and Annie Santor.  Rachel Dickey had an assist and the defense, led by Alison Gibbons, Allison Schuler and goalkeeper Berkley Messer held the Lady Spartans to a win at home!  (10/12)

*Your Varsity Ladies Tennis Team competed in the ECIC tournament over the weekend and went 3-2 on Friday and had Emma Nesbit qualify for sectionals!  Emma had a great tournament beating her first two opponents in 4 sets while losing only 2 games!  Thus, sealing a sectional tournament berth.  On day two she had two more hard fought matches taking her first opponent to 3 sets!  Great tournament Emma!  The Sectionals are this Friday at the Lakewood YMCA in Jamestown.  Good luck Emma!  (10/12)

    10/5/21

After giving up an early goal, the JV Soccer Girls battled back to tie the game 1-1 off of a great strike from Spartan Helmet winner, Sadie Eiss.  She went on Kaelan Bevilacqua and played lights out in net.  Grace Crissman dominated the midfield and showed how she can control a game with her skill, drive and competitiveness.  Lily Krentz marked Amherst’s best player and made her invisible all game long.  At each game a parent, referee, or spectator has made a positive comment about how much this team has improved from last year and throughout the season this year.   (10/5)

*Well, sometimes you have to announce the losses along with the wins, and today is one of those days for your Boys' Varsity Spartan Spikers.    Seven total points was all that stood between victory and defeat for the Spartans last night, as Williamsville East came into a sparsely filled gym (where were you guys?) and handed the Spartans a three set loss by scores of 28-26, 25-23, and 25-22.  DeAngelo D'Aloise and David Prozapas led the way with 12 and 14 kills respectively, while Justin Gerhard put up another solid effort with 34 assists, service errors and hitting errors accounted for 14 of the points awarded to the Flames.  For those of you scoring at home, 14 is exactly one half of seven; the total number of points that decided the match.  (10/5)

    10/4/21

The pieces are coming together for the Varsity Cross Country team, who took on state-level competition on Saturday at the McQuaid Invitational. Despite both teams missing 2 starters at full strength, your Spartans finished in the top half of the merged results of over 150 teams and 1,500 runners. The Boys Premier race opened fast, stayed fast, and showed what was possible with consistent hard work.  Nate Adams held on to finish 39th in a field that included three nationally-ranked teams. In the medium schools race, Peyton Spatorico made big gains in the final stretch to finish in the top 25. Liam Keelty also ran well to finish in the top half of the field.  On the girls side, Shannon Zugelder ran tough to finish ninth in the Premier race. Sophia Waliszewski improved her time by almost a minute to lead the Girls Varsity team, with Ava Wohlleber and Meagan Zupo close behind. The gutsiest performance of the meet may have come from Hannah Laubacker, who improved almost 3 minutes from the Amherst meet despite losing a shoe near the beginning of the race!  Wednesday's home meet versus Pioneer starts at 5:00 PM and features Senior Night, a brand new course, and one of the best individual duels in Section 6. Come out and support the Distance Gang!  (10/4)

*On Friday night, the Spartan Golf team faced a great Clarence squad and lost 246 to 260.  The medalist for the match was Starpoint's own, Joey 1 Chain Muscarella with an unbelievable round of 38.  That is 2 matches in a row now!  Other great rounds were shot by Drew Beiter with a 39 on his return to play, Tyler Grim 41, Drew Calvello with the round of his life shooting 46, Ryan Kalinski with another great round of 47, and finishing in the top 6 for the Spartans with round of 49 was Joe Manguso.  The Spartans will face Will East at Transit Valley on Wednesday and will finish their regular season against Sweet Home on Thursday.  Currently there are 4 Spartans qualified for the ECIC championships next week.  They are Drew Beiter, Tyler Grimm, Sean Schifferle, and Joe Muscarella.   (10/4)

*So, what happened when your Varsity Spartan Spikers went to Lockport Friday night, to play the favored Lions you ask?  Was Starpoint down three starters?  Yes.  Did they drop the first two sets?  Yes.  Did one of the new starters suffer an injury that took him out of the lineup?  Yes.  Did they lose?  No...no..emphatically no!  The Spartans took a huge step believing in themselves during this match, and after losing the first two sets 25-23 and 25-19, they got it together and took the next three by scores of 25-21, 25-19 and 15-10 in the tie breaker.  While there were a number of remarkable plays, as in Alex Chukhanenko showing off his soccer skills to keep a rally alive, the night belonged to super sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise who could not be stopped to the tune of 19 kills, Senior right side Solly Glynn's 10 kills, Senior captain David Prozapas who recorded 18 kills and five solo blocks, and Senior captain Justin Gerhard, who put a Starpoint record 49 assists for the Spartans.  It was a great win, but they have another huge match tonight, at home, versus a tough Williamsville East squad.  A win tonight will keep the Spartans on track to compete for first place in the league, so if you're available, c'mon out and lend your lungs to help your Spartans.  JV @ 5:00, Varsity @ 6:30.   (10/4)

*Yesterday afternoon the Spartan Golf team lost in an extremely tight match against the Sweet Home Panthers with a score of 275-272.  That's right, a 3 stroke differential even without one of our best golfers, Drew Beiter.   Unbelievable performances were turned in by Sean Schifferle with a score of 39, Tyler Grimm 40, and the medalist of the match, Mr Joseph Muscarella with a round of 38, or to your golfers 2 over par.  The Spartans finally have a day off this week but will face Clarence at PCGC on Friday.  Wish the boys and Alivia good luck.  (9/30)

*The JV Soccer Girls played a great game against a formidable opponent in Williamsville East.  The girls dominated in the 1st half of the game but fell short in the 2nd. Ari Hamilton and Mia Giamberdino were the co-Spartan helmet player of the game recipients. (9/30)

*Your Boys Varsity Soccer Team faced off against Will East last night and the Spartans showed Will East that playing with heart goes a long way. The boys hit Will East with everything.  Hitting a crossbar early and forcing the Will East keeper to make 3 game winning saves. A missed call resulted in a corner kick for Will East that found the back of the net giving Will East a 1-0 victory.  The boys are home tonight playing Iroquois. Come out and show your Spartan pride by cheering on your boys.  (9/30)

    9/29/21

*The Girls JV Soccer team lost a heartbreaker to Amherst 2-1 in the last minute of the game.  Matty Adamo and Lily Krentz shared the newly created Spartan helmet for “Player of the Game.”  Matty scored one goal and Lily was a beast on defense.  Win or lose, no Starpoint athlete should ever feel ashamed of the result of a game or embarrassed to hear it on the announcements. Athletes be proud of the unique and positive characteristics you possess.  Many can’t do what you do!  (9/29)

*Last night, the Girls Varsity Volleyball team captured their sixth win of the season against the Amherst Tigers, improving their record to 6-2. The top shooters for the team were Tyler Grimm 43, Joe Muscarella 45, Sean Schifferle 47,  Joe Manguso 48, Ryan Kalinski 49, and Alivia Zawisky 53.  The Spartans face the Sweet Home Panthers on Wednesday at PCGC.  (9/29)

*Your Boys Varsity Spartan Spikers proved last night that excuses are for losers.  Although down three starters (of the six that normally occupy the volleyball pitch) the Spartans simply said, "Next man up" and put away the Williamsville South Billies by scores of 25-15, 25-18, and to be sporting, 25-22.  David Prozapas was dominant in the middle once again, while first time starter Sam Parise contributed with kills, blocks, digs and service aces, all at opportune times in the match.  David Pilecki, DeAngelo D'Aloise, Solly Glynn, Colby Bashor all had productive matches, whiloe Justin Gerhard kept the Spartan machine humming along.  To cap the night off, Aiden Zimmerman hammered the final spike into the Billies defense, and the job was complete.

The Spartans are 6-3 overall, but tied for first in their division with a 4-1 record.  The Spartans welcome the Niagara Wheatfield Falcons to Starpoint tonight, and travel to Lockport Friday to complete the Niagara County loop.  JV starts at 4:30 tonight, with Varsity following around 6:00.  C'mon out and "S.O.S."  Support Our Spartans!  (9/29)

    9/28/21

Your Spartan Lady Tennis Squad lost a tough match yesterday to Will East 1-4.  The lone victor was Lydia Roselund who battered her opponent 7-5, 6-2.  Coming into the match Lydia was ready to  pounce knowing she had a tough match that she had lost to last week.  But she knew she had what it took and Lydia struck hard and struck fast.  Amazing job Lydia!  All the girls played well and next we have Hamburg Wednesday.   Let's beat the Bulldogs!  (9/28)

The Lady Spartan Tennis Team lost a tough match Friday to Will South 2-3.  Alexis Lichtenberger struck first winning 6-2, 6-1.  All the other girls had great close matches as well.  At 3rd singles Lydia Roselund suffered a crushing loss in the first set losing a 9-7 tie break.  Only to come back with a vengeance and win the second set 6-2, forcing a 3rd set tie break.  Dodging one match point Lydia won the tie break 12-10!  Great match LYDIA.  Next the ladies go out to Will East.  (9/27)

*The Boys Varsity soccer team played back to back games last week. The boys faced off Friday night at home vs. Will South and after playing a hard fought defensive game vs. the WNY ranked team, the boys gave up a goal late in the game losing 1-0.  Saturday morning the boys played the Niagara Orleans division undefeated Roy-Hart and played to a 2-0 victory.  Scoring for your Spartans was Aiden Prince assisted by Trevor Pollow and the second goal came from Evan Stefanski unassisted. The ladies would eventually go on to win the Championship game winning in two sets 25-20 and 25-15! Congratulations to both the JV and Varsity Girls Volleyball teams on their first place wins this weekend.

    9/23/21

Last night, your Boys Volleyball Spartan Spikers were at an early crossroad in their season.  They were on the road in Hamburg for a match against the first place Bulldogs. With one starter out with injury, and another coming back after losing a battle with poison ivy, the Spartans made it clear they were not willing to succumb to excuses.  After a first set loss 25-23, the Spartans pulled themselves together, and showed Hamburg what a team that plays for each other is truly capable of, taking the next three sets 25-22, 25-21 and 25-16 to send a message that when Spartans are injured and backed into a corner, that's when they become dangerous.  The Spartans welcome the St. Joe's Marauders to Starpoint Friday night, a match for which the Varsity Spartan Spikers will again be down two starters.  Sounds dangerous for the Marauders.  Hope you make it out to the match.  If not, watch the broadcast on Lockport's hometown television, LCTV.  (9/23)

*Last night the boys soccer team played a long drawn out game vs West Seneca East. The game was postponed due to lightning and heavy rains and when the Spartans finally got back on the field the boys beat West Seneca East 4-0. Scoring for your Spartans was Cohen Vogel, Evan Stefanski, Brady Hathaway and Colby Madden. Travis Pollow earned his clean sheet with two incredible saves. The boys all played great considering the heavy rain. The win puts the Spartans in 4th place in their division.  (9/23)

    9/21/21

*Last night proved once again that in sports the win doesn't always go to the better or more deserving team. Last night your Varsity Boys Soccer team played an outstanding game at home vs a league dominant Grand Island team. The boys owned the visitors from Erie county. The shock and awe of the boys constant attack had Grand Island confused and gasping for air as the Spartans continued their relentless assault on the visitors all night long and in the end a misstep in the Spartans 6 yard box resulted in Grand Island scoring the only goal of the game.   The boys will take this energy into their next game at home vs West Seneca East on Wednesday night.  Great game by all.  Spartan Pride is alive and well with the boys Varsity soccer team. Get behind the Boys Varsity Soccer Team and come on out and help cheer them on to victory.  (9/21)

*The Girls Varsity Field Hockey Team lost a tough battle against Will East last night.  The girls played hard and didn’t give up.  Their next game is against Eden on September 28th.  (9/21)

*Your Lady Spartans Volleyball Team suffered a tough loss yesterday to the Williamsville East flames. With valiant efforts from the entire team, the girls took the match to a fifth set. 9/20/21

*On Saturday, the Varsity Cross Country teams made a statement with a great showing at the West Seneca Invitational. In a dominating performance, the Boys team of Liam Keelty, Brandon Clarke, Nick Allen, Nolan Armitage, and Alex Rudnick took five of the top six scoring spots to finish first in the Varsity B race. The Girls Frosh team of Gurmann Kaur, Lyndzie Wagner, Annabelle Pacouloute, Marlea Petroziello, and Sage Pohl also ran well to take fourth. (9/20)

*The Girls Varsity Squad ran a tough race to take 8th, in a nail-biter that included six of the top ten large schools. Eighth grader Shannon Zugelder led the way with the fastest girls time of the day, while Kristina Valnarov stepped up with a great race to finish inside the top 15. Marisa Funari, Meagan Zupo, and Ava Wohlleber rounded out the scoring for the Spartans. The last race of the day saw the Boys Varsity Squad upset 4th-ranked Orchard Park for 2nd place, 4 points away from the team win. With 1 mile to go, Nate Adams pulled away to take the individual title. He was closely followed by Peyton Spatorico and Franklin Payne, who both ran huge PRs to take 10th and 13th. Ben Olson and Tim Lukasik also scored for the 7th-ranked Spartans.    The road to Knox Farms continues next week, with a long-awaited rematch against rival Amherst and a road trip to Rochester for the McQuaid Invitational. If you want to get in on the fun, ask a team member about indoor track!  (9/20)

*On Saturday, your Boys Varsity Spartan Spikers wrapped up a seven matches in 12 days gauntlet at the inaugural East Aurora volleyball tournament.  The competition was formidable, boasting some of the best teams from around here and Rochester as well.  The Spartans qualified for the Gold Medal playoffs, but were knocked out by a talented team from McQuaid High in Rochester in an extremely entertaining match with scores of 26-24 and 25-22.  David Prozapas, Jon Zawada, Alex Chukhanenko, Solomon Glynn, Deangelo D'Aloise all had great days, and their efforts were highlighted by the naming of Justin Gerhard to the all-tournament team.   The team is on the road again this week Wednesday versus league rival Hamburg, but finally returns home Friday night for a non-league, televised match against Coach Spitler's alma mater, St. Joe's.  Come on out to the gym Friday night to watch our JV and Varsity Spartans battle with the very talented Marauder squads and who knows; someone might see you on TV that night.  (9/20)

*The Varsity Football team defeated Kenmore East 39-6 on Homecoming and Senior night.  Carson Marcus threw for 301 yards and 6 touchdowns.  Evan Floss caught 11 passes for 135 yards and 4 touchdowns.  Evan Dean caught 6 for 119 yards including a 83-yard touchdown.  Nate Lee also caught a TD.  Jason Richardson added 7 tackles and a 72-yard interception return.  George Thompson had 8 tackles.  (9/20)

    9/17/21

*The Boys' JV Volleyball Team capped a successful week by going 3 and 0; This resilient group defeated Amherst 2-1 and swept Sweet Home and North Tonawanda 3-0.  A total team effort went into making this a successful week with everyone contributing and getting into the action.  Practice Saturday morning at 9:30!  (9/17)

*After a tough loss on Wednesday night that saw your Spartan Spikers lose one of their "spikiest" fellows to injury, the team re-grouped with a new lineup.  After dropping the first set 25-23 as they got used to this new lineup, the Spartans decided to put the lumber to the Jacks, knocking them out in straight sets thereafter 25-13, 25-18 and 25-15.  Super Sophomore Spiker DeAngelo D'Aloise showed NT what got away from them, leading all hitters with 16 kills which also represented half of Senior captain Justin Gerhard's 32 assists.  However, the absolute stunning highlight of the night, if not the season, was the seemingly unbelievable one handed dig by Junior setter Sam Parise, which became believable when it was followed by an absolutely unbelievable stuff block by Sam who had barely recovered from the dig to get to the net and completely demoralize the NT Lumberjack who turned in his axe after that swing.   Coach Spitler lost his glasses reacting to the play.  Luckily, they were cheap.  (9/17)

    9/16/21

The Spartans Boys JV Soccer Team went against the Amherst Tigers last night. They won that game 4-2.  Our goal scorers and assist leaders were: Ben Stenman with 2 goals, Matt Tillman with 2 goals, Mason Gfroerer with 1 assist, and Zack Ely with 1 assist. Great job on the win boys!  (9/16)

*The Girls Varsity Volleyball team captured their second win of the season with a 25-22, 25-23, 25-15 sweep of West Seneca East Trojans. Emily Mielcarek and Aly Washburn were strong at the serving line, delivering back-to-back aces. Morgan Bennett, Emma Browka, and Haley Hickson played a locked-in defense which enabled Carly Dell'Oso and Ashleigh Schreader to lead the charge offensively. Congratulations on a great team win! Last night, your Men's Spartan Spikers got back on track and into the win column with a straight set victory over league opponent Amherst, taming the Tigers 25-22, 25-16 and 25-16.  While Senior Setter Justin Gerhard kept the offensive attack running, and Junior Libero Jon Zawada made some sparkling defensive plays, everyone on the squad contributed to this "W."  Perhaps most noteworthy was the serving and stellar defensive performance put on by Senior David Pilecki, who made an absolute gem of a dig that everyone and their brother, sister and mother believed would hit the floor.  Everyone except David, who made a one armed, 270 degree spinning dig that was converted into a thunderous kill by the combination of Gerhard and Junior Outside Hitter Evan Saunders.  The win keeps the Spartans undefeated in league, and they have done so without dropping a set to this point.  They will try to keep this streak alive this Wednesday on the road against the Panthers of Sweet Home High School.  Stay tuned!

*Your Starpoint Girls Varsity Tennis Squad won a hard fought battle Friday defeating the Hamburg Bulldogs 4-1.  First to strike was Emma Nesbit at 2nd singles winning 6-0, 6-1.  Then Lydia Roselund won in straight sets as well.  First doubles Anna Solar and Lana Boyer won 2-1, while second doubles tandem Ariana Reynolds and Ella Geilow lost a well fought match.  To seal the win, Alexis Lichtenberger won in straight sets coming back from a 1-4 deficit in the 1st.  She may only be 5'3, but her Grit... is LEGIT!  Next we have Amherst today at home.  Cmon out!  Match time is 5:00 PM!  (9/13)

*The"never say quit" Boys' JV Volleyball Team captured its second straight North Tonawanda Tournament Championship on Saturday by sweeping North Tonawanda in the semi-finals and Grand Island in the finals.  The team lost one set the entire day and was sparked by a 30-28 victory over Lockport to secure the top seed.  Co-captain, Jack Hawkins's solid setting led the way for the young Sparatans against Lockport while Zack Clark, Nolan Schmidt, Hugh Adams, Gavin Farrell, Lucas Crawford, Max Williamson, Aiden Preisch, Jackson Andrews-Nye, and Michael Hershberger never quit on any play.  In the finals, libero Raistlin Rowcroft, Brady Cox and Dima Zhilevich stood out with strong defense and hitting.  Down 13-19 in set 2 to Grand Island, Hayden Schuler rallied the team to victory with incredible shut down blocking.  Congratulations for a total team effort and to Noah Umstead and Michael Cyr for making the All-Tournament Team. (9/13)

*When you hear "Friday Night Lights", do you think of Cross Country? That's exactly what happened last Friday, as your Spartans opened their season at the Dash in the Dark in Oakfield, Section 5. The task was a 6 mile relay, split evenly between three runners.  The night opened with some great performances. In the Girls Blue race, Annabelle Pacouloute, Lyndzie Wagner, and Sage Pohl finished 11th out of 45 teams. The team of Justin Brown, Nolan Armitage, and Josh Szymanski  also finished in the top half of the Boys Blue race.  The Gold races saw a preview of a possible Sectionals showdown, as the team of Shannon Zugelder, Ava Wohlleber, and Marisa Funari finished 14th out of 78, less than a second ahead of rival Grand Island. Nate Adams, Franklin Payne, and Peyton Spatorico were the top boys team from Section 6. They averaged under 6 minute mile pace to finish 9th.  Both the girls and boys are ranked in the top 10 large schools in the latest Buffalo News poll. They will try to improve on that ranking this Saturday, as they take on their first 5k at Sunshine Park in West Seneca.   (9/13)

*Your Varsity Spartan Spikers took on the #1 team in WNY last evening, the Canisius Crusaders.  Everyone outside Mapleton Road expected a blow out, but the Spartans gave Canisius all they could handle.  After dropping the first two sets 16-25 and 17-25, the Spartans regrouped and took down the Crusaders 25-21 in the third set.  In a hotly contested fourth set, the Spartans were up 19 - 16, but lost focus just long enough to drop the fourth set and ultimately the match 22-25.   Regardless, the play of Senior Captain Justin Gerhard kept the Spartans in the match all night, along with the help of Senior co-captain David Prozapas, Junior Evan Saunders and Sophomore DeAngelo D'Aloise.   That match was certainly worth the price of admission.  If you can, plan on being there for the Spatans next home match next Monday against the Tigers of Amherst High School.  (9/10)

After graduating nine seniors last season, this year's version of the Starpoint Varsity Spartan spikers have some big shoes to fill.  So far, they are doing just that, and doing it rather well.  Last Thursday night, the Spartan Spikers opened their season on the road by taking down the Billy Goats of Williamsville South in straight sets 25-14, 25-17 and 25 -18.  Then last night, the Spartans traveled to Athol Springs to take on the St. Francis Red Raiders.  The gym was hot, but the Spartans were hotter, cooling off the Raiders 25-21, 23-25 (minor misstep there) 25-23, and 25-13 in the final set.   Senior Captain Justin Gerhard set the Spartans into the win column, while Junior libero Jon Zawada anchored the defense.  Huge contributions were made during this stretch by Senior co-captain David Prozapas, Junior Evan Saunders and Sophomore DeAngelo D'Alouise.    The Spartans have their first home match this Thursday against the Crusaders of Canisius High School, the current #1 team in WNY.  If you are available and have a mask, come on out to the match!  (9/8)
