AP World II Parent Letter

  • September 6, 2017

Dear Parent/Guardian of AP World History Student,

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year!  Your son or daughter is about to embark on the second half of the two-year college level survey of World History.  I am confident that your child will continue to find the course both rewarding and challenging, as it is a truly unique course.  However, the course can easily become frustrating and overwhelming if it is not approached with the appropriate level of discipline and organization.  Additionally, it is extremely important that your student and I maintain a positive attitude if they are going to benefit from their AP experience.   As parents and guardians you play a key role in your child’s success in the course which is why I hope to keep an open line of communication throughout the year.

Throughout this school year, the length of homework assignments will vary.  However, the reading load continues to be particularly heavy and keeping up with this reading is the single most important step your child can take to being successful in this course.  In addition, AP classes are extremely demanding and every minute of instructional time is precious.  Please help ensure that your child is in school every day, on-time.  In the event of an absence it is extremely important that students make up the work they missed.

Upon completion of the course, students will leave with a comprehensive historical framework and the capacity to compare and contrast the major historical eras. In addition, among the most important skills which students will continue to learn is how to process large amounts of seemingly disparate information.  Students will continue to improve their essay-writing skills.  In fact, half of the AP World History exam score reflects a student’s essay analysis and writing ability. Therefore, students will continue to learn how to consistently write three different essay types.  Furthermore, the culmination of the course is the AP test, which will be given on Thursday, May 17, 2018.  All students will be expected to take this test.  There is a $92.00 fee for this test, with opportunities for fee reductions for income-eligible students.  More information about the test and fees will be forthcoming.

At the end of this school year, it is my hope and goal that AP World History will prove to be invaluable for your student's later studies and will provide them with the skills necessary to succeed in other AP courses here at Starpoint High School.
