2010 Alumni Baseball Game
5th Annual Alumni Baseball Weekend
June 11-13, 2010
The 5th annual alumni baseball weekend was one to remember. Our first-ever golf outing held June 11 went off great. 20 players and coaches ranging from 1973 to grads from '07 participated. Ross Johnston '07 won the closest to the pin contest and Coach Racey won longest drive. Both received outstanding trophies and all alumni and coaches were given official baseball golf towels.
Threatening forecasts may have kept some away, but the 10 players who showed up for the Saturday practice were rewarded with hot, humid temps and a sunny sky. They all got lots of hitting and fielding in during the 2 hour practice.
The game itself was another alumni classic starting with umpire Marv Otto '71. We had a wide range of players. The two most veteran were Jack Pittsley '73 and Russ Chaffee '74. Don Rankie '80 had to face son Alex and was able to take one deep to center for a 2-run double. Tim Szalkowski '08 cleared the fence for the first-ever, over the fence HR in an alumni game.
Russ Chaffee emptied the bases for Team Garnet (even years) with a bases loaded 300 ft. single that put Team Garnet up 9-7 and led to a 13-7 lead. Jacob Jenks '04 was in great form getting 2 solid hits. Rob Fraass '89 was a key hitter in the Team Black (odd years) comeback. Rob had some great hits including a big 2 RBI triple. Jim Blount '88 was outstanding in right field throwing out 2 runners from the outfield. Jim, a former 2nd baseman for me, showed his strength and has improved through the years.
The drama occurred in the 9th inning....leading 13-7, Team Garnet looked to win their 2nd game in a row after getting their first win last year, but the odd years rallied. Taking advantage of a few miscues and timely hitting, they tied it up with two outs and a runner in scoring position. A line shot to right center looked to be the winning hit, but Tim Szalkowski '08 made an unbelievable diving catch to preserve the tie (13-13) and for the second time in 5 years, both teams were able to leave without a loss.
The current record......Team Odd Years-2 wins, Team Even Years-1 win, and 2 games ended in a tie. There was a large crowd attending to watch the game and all players and spectators were given free hot dogs, pop, and popcorn as their reward.
Thanks to the coaches who helped, and Louie Sprenger and my wife, Liz, for cooking.
Pictures of the teams are attached. For more pictures, go to www.starpointbaseball.org. Looking forward to next year already. The 3 day event was a hit and I hope to continue it.
