2013 Alumni baseball Game
8th Annual Alumni Baseball Game
June 8, 2013
The 8th Annual Alumni Baseball weekend was another great success. 18 golfers didn't let light drizzle and having to walk the course deter them. The team of Kyle Kozlowski ('07), Bob Britton ('07), Tim Szalkowski ('08), and Cory Clark ('05) won the scramble with an 11 under score and received championship hats. The longest drive also went to Kozlowski and closest to the pin was won by Nate Beutel ('05).
Saturday morning it looked like it would be our first-ever rainout but with the help of coaches and players, we were ready to go on time at noon. The game was as exciting as ever, but also with great defensive plays, the lowest 9-inning score ever.
We divided into Home vs Visitors because we had 22 players, but more "even" year graduates than "odd" years. Senior Austin Speaker threw all the way for both teams and Frosh Matt Cross caught for the visitors. Alex Boyce ('07), who came in from New York City for the game, scored first for the Home team in the bottom of the 2nd on Joe Bufalino's ('04) double. The final out that inning was the catch of the day when Russ Chaffee ('74), our oldest player, hit a shot to the warning track that was caught by Cory Regnet ('12) on a diving catch. Eric Roberts ('07) hit a triple off the 370 sign and Joe Bufalino knocked in his 2nd RBI.
The Visitors broke through with back to back doubles by Korey Schwab ('12) and
Andy Boyce ('10). Bottom of the 6th, Joe Bufalino singled for his 3rd straight hit. Top of 7, game was tied when Adam Barry ('92) was driven in by Marc Chaffee ('05). Top of 9th, Dr. Todd Retell ('80), playing for the first time, singled but was stranded. The Home team threatened in the bottom of 9th when Eric Roberts reached base with a single. An error put runners on 2nd and 3rd but an infield pop-up ended the game in a 3-3 tie; our 3rd tie game in 8 years.
We went through almost 90 hotdogs and drinks after the game and players hung out renewing friendships. Another Great Starpoint Spartan Day !
